The Venetian Lagoon (Laguna Veneta) is the large bay area in which the city of Venice is located. Viewed in this photograph from the Bell Tower in Piazza San Marco, the lagoon is a shallow, salt water inlet in the Adriatic Sea.
The Venetian Lagoon is a busy transportation corridor for small boats, gondolas, commuter ferries called "vaporetti" and even large cruise ships. There is a beautiful pedestrian walkway that runs along much of the lagoon.
